New Haven, Connecticut —

Much has changed since the New Haven Colony was founded in 1638 but at least one thing has remained the same.

The bustling Connecticut city is still a haven. But instead of offering safety to Puritans seeking religious freedom, it’s now an oasis for foodies, history buffs and fans of live music, old master paintings and theater.

Located about 75 miles from New York City, New Haven is home to prestigious Yale University. And while this college town isn’t the capital of Connecticut — that’s Hartford — it is the state’s cultural capital.

Like other planned former colonial cities, including Philadelphia and Savannah, New Haven invites exploration on foot because the original downtown core was largely undisturbed by urban renewal.
