July 1, 2026 Updated 8:09 am EDTIt’s a great day to be a good player in the NHL.Free agency opens Wednesday with all of the top potential 2026 unrestricted free agents having long since signed contracts to take themselves off the market. In their wake, the conditions are incredibly favorable for the remaining players to maximize earning potential. The system is flooded with new money as the salary cap shoots to $104 million, and there simply isn’t enough talent to spend it on.That’s fantastic news for well-respected veterans Sergei Bobrovsky and John Carlson, who will land pricey contracts entering their age-38 and age-36 seasons, respectively.

They are at the top of the pecking order.Behind them are right-shot defenseman Jacob Trouba and three wingers: Anders Lee, Anthony Mantha and Mason Marchment, a power forward who should draw a crowd coming off a strong season. The market is woefully short on centers, with Boone Jenner and Scott Laughton among the few available players at that position who are capable of playing above the fourth line. With the opening of free agency coming into view, we’ve refreshed the big board (yet again). As always, players are ranked by how closely they demand watching, given their potential impact and the buzz around them.Enjoy.This story will update with signings as they happen, so refresh often and see who’s left in real time.(Note: Net ratings are for 2025-26 via The Athletic’s Dom Luszczyszyn’s model, stats are via Hockey-Reference and GSAx via Evolving-Hockey.
