Swift police action leads to 13 arrests amid anti-immigration protests in Cape Town.
Cape Town authorities say there were no significant incidents overnight linked to the widely publicised anti-illegal immigration shutdown on June 30. However, law enforcement agencies responded to several isolated attacks targeting foreign-owned businesses in parts of the city.
According to the City of Cape Town's Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, the marches on Tuesday were small and largely peaceful, with law enforcement swiftly intervening when criminal activity occurred.
Smith said enforcement services responded to "several opportunistic acts of crime against foreign-owned businesses" in areas including Delft, Gugulethu, Hanover Park and Mfuleni.
He described the incidents as isolated and confirmed that authorities had made multiple arrests.
