Deputy Speaker Annelie Lotriet said she was satisfied that Julius Malema’s motion was substantively in order and complied with the rules except for a few procedural amendments.
National Assembly Deputy Speaker Annelie Lotriet has given the green light to the motion of no confidence against Speaker Thoko Didiza pending the EFF amending the motion to meet procedural requirements.
EFF leader Julius Malema tabled the motion last month after Didiza did not oppose President Cyril Ramaphosa’s application for an interdict against the impeachment proceedings, citing her failure to discharge her constitutional responsibilities with independence, impartiality, and integrity.
Didiza chose to abide by the ruling of the court, and the Impeachment Committee, through its Chairperson Makhashule Gana, filed a notice to oppose the application.
Lotriet said in a letter to EFF chief whip Nontando Nolutshungu that a motion to remove a Speaker or deputy must comply with the parliamentary rules and may not contain statements, arguments, or other matters not strictly necessary to make the proposed resolution intelligible.
