This year's sardine run has kicked-off to a slow start.

THE 2026 sardine run has kicked-off to a slow start in KZN, with only six nets netted in the Transkei area during the first netting, as Durban seine netters patiently await the arrival of the “greatest shoal on earth”.

Jace Govender, a third generation seine netter and superintendent for beaches for eThekwini Municipality told POST on Monday that there were no sardine sightings in the east coast of KZN.

He said sardines were “far out” due to the warmer water in Durban.

“The sardines are looking for the deeper, cooler water. There are lots of sardines and other bait still in the Transkei area between Port St Johns and East London.
