Sardine netting activity at Port Edward.

The annual Sardine Run is gathering momentum along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline, with fresh shoals netted at Pumula and Umzumbe as the famous migration continues its journey north.

While activity has increased along parts of the South Coast, larger concentrations of sardines remain further south, raising expectations that Durban's beachfront could witness the spectacle within the next two weeks.

South African Protea angler Jace Govender told POST recent nettings at Pumula and Umzumbe were a sign that the migration was progressing steadily.

“A shoal of sardine was netted at Pumula and one at the Umzumbe area, on the Umzumbe flats,” Govender said.
