Sir, – In recent years, mostly during exam season, I have noticed more television close-ups of young people grappling with pen or pencil. It almost looks like they have formed a full fist around the shaft of the writing instrument, as they try desperately to keep it under control. When I started school, we were taught that the “correct” way to hold the pen was the dynamic tripod grip. Nowadays we no longer insist there is only this one true “correct” way, but it is still accepted widely as the most functional and the most efficient method to get to grips with your pen.The method is well named as it is a simple three-fingered grip, holding the pen between the thumb, the index finger and the middle finger. The ring finger and the little finger are not directly involved, but they are foundational for stability. The tripod grip continues to stand the test of time. It gives the writer optimal dexterity and control. It must be exercised lightly and not tightly, like the fiddler holds the bow, to minimise hand fatigue and cramping and to make extended sessions more comfortable. It is not hard to learn, but it does require patience and practice. If you are an adult who has never had the opportunity to master the tripod grip or if you have children or grandchildren who have not yet been exposed to it, there are some very good introductory videos on the internet. Start as soon as possible and it will come naturally. – Yours, etc, PÁDRAIC HARVEY,An Cheathrú Rua,Co na Gaillimhe.
