High prices, low wages and pensions remain the issues of greatest concern to Greek voters, according to a MARC poll for ANT1, while two newly launched parties – Hope for Democracy, led by Tempe rail disaster campaigner Maria Karystianou, and former SYRIZA prime minister Alexis Tsipras’ ELAS – have yet to win broad public support, with voters expressing reservations about both.
The cost of living was cited as the country’s biggest problem by 73.8% of respondents. It was followed by salaries and pensions (39.4%), corruption (31.4%) and crime (27.7%). Health ranked fifth at 23.8%, ahead of wars (22.1%), immigration (13.6%), national issues and Greek-Turkish relations (13.2%), demographics (12.6%) and education (11.1%).
The survey also found that public sentiment toward the conservative New Democracy government remains predominantly negative. Overall, 64% of respondents rated the government’s performance as negative or somewhat negative, while 35.2% expressed a positive or somewhat positive view.
New Democracy voters largely approved of the government’s performance, while supporters of the leftist SYRIZA and socialist PASOK parties were overwhelmingly critical.
