Ramon Alexander on the piano and Shaun Johannes on double bass perform at a memorial concert for Abdullah Ibrahim on Monday at the Artscape. The event is supported by the Cape Town International Jazz Festival and various musicians.

This heartfelt tribute commemorates the life and legacy of the legendary South African jazz pianist Abdullah Ibrahim, detailing his final days and his peaceful passing in June. His partner Dr Marina Umari characterises Ibrahim as a master of discipline and silence who used his music to bridge cultural divides and speak to our common humanity. Beyond his artistic prowess, she highlights his quest for spiritual enlightenment, whose lifelong commitment to learning and ancestral connection allowed him to transcend boundaries. Ultimately, the tribute below celebrates Ibrahim’s enduring influence on future generations, emphasising that his spirit remains an "ancient well" of wisdom for his beloved homeland.

Thank you all for being there tonight at the Artscape Theatre to commemorate Abdullah Ibrahim, his life, his music, his legacy, his dedication to humanity. I'm with you all in my thoughts and very grateful. Our brother with perfect timing all the way to his last months, weeks, and days. We are so grateful to the Cape Town International Jazz Festival.
