Legendary Cape Town pianist Abdullah Ibrahim has died.
South African jazz icon Abdullah Ibrahim, one of the country's most celebrated musicians and cultural ambassadors, has died at the age of 91.
The legendary pianist and composer passed away peacefully in Germany following a short illness, surrounded by his family.
The news was confirmed to IOL by his family on Monday, bringing to a close a remarkable career spanning more than seven decades that saw Ibrahim become one of the most influential figures in global jazz.
Renowned for blending jazz with the rich musical traditions of South Africa, Ibrahim's work resonated across continents and generations, earning him international acclaim while remaining deeply rooted in the sounds and struggles of his homeland.
