As part of its monsoon preparedness and flood mitigation efforts, Thoothukudi Corporation commenced the widening of Puckle canal in last February at a cost of ₹53.70 crore. However the project which has a contract period of 18 months, is currently progressing at snail pace. The 7-km canal serves as one of the primary stormwater drains of Thoothukudi City. It originates near Food Corporation of India’s godown and drains into Bay of Bengal in Therespuram.Under the project, the 6,890-metre canal is being widened by 5-metre and height of the side wall is increased by 2.10-metre. In addition, construction of 10 new bridges and extension of 15 existing bridges have also been added into the project. The unusual heavy rainfall witnessed in Thoothukudi in recent years has exposed the functional constraints of the canal, such as sewage intrusions and waste clogging the waterway. Although, every year the Corporation undertakes measures, including desilting and regular prevention of waste dumping along the banks of the canal, the expansion work has been initiated to ensure free flow of water during monsoon season.According to sources from Thoothukudi Corporation, although the expansion work started in February, it has been progressing slowly, especially in the last few months. As of now, earth work of 500 metres and raft work of around 300 metres have been completed. The source alleged that delay in progress was also due to shifting of poles and transformers in the expansion route, by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB), which reportedly initiated the process only recently.Sources further noted efforts are being made to complete the project within the stipulated contract period for the convenience of residents.
