The Tiruchi Corporation has taken steps to carry out patchwork and repairs to badly damaged roads in all five zones in the city ahead of the monsoon.Several major roads in Thillai Nagar, Puthur, Cantonment, Thennur, Woraiyur have been damaged, with potholes and uneven surfaces reducing the effective width of carriageways and causing inconvenience to motorists and road users. The civic body has planned to repair the damaged roads. Junior engineers in all five zones had been instructed to identify the roads that needed extensive repair and relaying work in their division, and funds were to be allocated accordingly.“A sum of ₹2 crore has been sanctioned for the repair work, and the tender will be floated soon,” said Veer Pratap Singh, Corporation Commissioner. The Corporation plans to commence the work in the coming weeks and complete it before the onset of the monsoon. Officials said wet-mix patchwork would be carried out to fill potholes and level and compact uneven road surfaces. The simultaneous execution of underground drainage (UGD) and drinking-water projects has contributed to extensive damage to several roads in the city. Several interior roads in residential areas are yet to be relaid and have become unmotorable.Officials said funds under the Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Fund (TURIF) were expected to be released within a month. The funds would be utilised for relaying roads requiring more extensive repairs. However, residents have urged officials to inspect the quality of the work, alleging that much of the newly laid surface comes off after even a short spell of rain, causing two-wheelers to skid and posing a serious safety risk to motorists.
