European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has described Turkey as “a key partner” on security, migration and energy during a high-level visit to Ankara aimed at strengthening cooperation on shared strategic priorities.
Following talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Kallas said the two discussed closer EU-Turkey relations, the importance of good-neighborly ties, Russia’s war against Ukraine, conflicts in the Middle East and preparations for next week’s NATO summit in Ankara.
She also praised Turkey’s contribution to protecting NATO’s eastern flank.
Kallas was accompanied by EU Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner and Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos.
Kallas, Kos and Brunner are expected to meet Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan during the visit.
