European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has described Turkey as a “key partner” during a period of heightened geopolitical turbulence, following a telephone conversation on Tuesday with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

In a post on the X platform, von der Leyen stressed that the European Union and Turkey share common interests, including the safeguarding of open trade routes, energy security, and the stability of global supply chains.

She added that cooperation between the two sides will continue in these areas, while expressing EU appreciation for Ankara’s efforts toward de-escalation and diplomatic engagement in relation to the Iran crisis.

She also noted that the discussion included the Eastern Mediterranean and the Cyprus issue, with both sides underlining the importance of EU-Turkey relations.

According to Kathimerini sources, the call took place at the request of the Turkish president, and focused primarily on the Middle East crisis and Cyprus, with no additional issues raised.
