A Mixed Jury Court in Iraklio, Crete, handed life sentences on Tuesday to a 27-year-old mother and her 44-year-old partner who abused a three-year-old toddler to death.
The mother received an additional 23 years and nine months for the crime, and her partner an extra 24 years and three months in the high-profile trial into the murder of three-year-old Angelos.
Earlier in the trial, the two suspects were found guilty of manslaughter by complicity, causing injuries and serious intentional harm, exposing a minor to danger, use and possession of a weapon, and illegal possession of a hunting rifle.
The man was also found guilty of collecting and recording personal data. The court rejected a claim for diminished accountability of the mother, requested by her defense.
The court adopted the prosecution’s proposal and rejected the defendants’ requests for leniency citing lawful conduct before their arrest.
