Lithuania’s parliament on Tuesday approved the appointment of Social Democratic Party leader Mindaugas Sinkevičius as the country’s new prime minister following changes in the governing coalition.

Lawmakers voted 80-2 in favour of Sinkevičius’ nomination, with 28 abstentions.

The 42-year-old, who also serves as mayor of the Jonava district municipality, agreed to lead Lithuania’s 21st government after former Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė stepped down following the reshaping of the ruling coalition.

Under Lithuania’s Constitution, the president appoints and dismisses the prime minister with the approval of parliament.
