‘We need it back,” far-right AfD’s Weidel said

Germany’s far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) would seek to restore imports of Russian gas if it came to power, party leader Alice Weidel said, arguing that cheap Russian energy was key to reviving Europe’s largest economy.

The AfD has been polling above 27% in recent surveys, ahead of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democrats, putting Weidel’s party in a strong position ahead of the next federal election, due in 2029.

“Cheap energy from Russia was the secret of the success of ‘Made in Germany’. We need it back,” party leader Alice Weicdel told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday.

The comments come after the EU’s phased ban on Russian gas imports entered into force on 18 March, with member states required to phase out remaining imports by autumn 2027 following years of Moscow’s energy coercion.
