Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis told a Cabinet meeting Tuesday that fuel prices at petrol stations are expected to drop further amid the easing of tension between the US and Iran in the Persian Gulf.
He said that “there will be supervision from the ministry and the independent authority, and a common understanding with market forces to freeze prices for the next two months.”
Government officials have said a profit cap imposed on dozens of key consumer goods amid the war in the Persian Gulf will not be renewed when it expires Tuesday, but manufacturers and retailers have agreed not to increase shelf prices for the next two months.
The decisions followed a meeting under Mitsotakis in Athens Monday, with the participation of government officials and representatives of manufacturers, food wholesalers and supermarkets.
Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting will include a review of the conservative government’s performance so far this year and planning for the second half of 2026.
