Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Tuesday voiced optimism that the end of the Persian Gulf crisis will result in a reduction of fuel prices amid Greece’s cost-of-living crisis.

Speaking in Voula, southern Athens, Mitsotakis said he was well aware that “high prices are a source of pain right now” to consumers.

“The end of the war between the US and Iran is a very positive development,” he added. “The government will ensure that the decline in oil prices will result in a drop in the cost of diesel and petrol.”

Mitsotakis said he will present a new online platform Wednesday to allow consumers to easily compare prices in key goods.

Ever since the pandemic, the country has struggled to deal with a cost-of-living crisis that is routinely identified in polls as Greeks’ main source of concern. The problem got even worse after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine and the crisis in the Middle East.
