School of Engineering and Neuro X Institute professor Eduardo Moraud has been awarded one of two 2026 Robert Bing Prizes by the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences (SAMS) for his translational research on movement disorders.Eduardo Moraud, assistant professor and Medtronic Chair in Neuromodulation at EPFL's School of Engineering (Neuro X Institute), shares this year's prize with Aiman Saab of the University of Zurich. Awarded every two years, the Robert Bing Prize recognises researchers who have done outstanding work to improve the recognition, treatment and cure of neurological diseases.Working at the intersection of clinical neurology, neuroscience and engineering, Moraud and his team have pioneered the first physiology-driven approach to adaptive deep brain stimulation, designed specifically to restore gait and balance in people with Parkinson's disease. Using personalised neural decoding algorithms, the stimulation adapts in real time to each patient's mobility demands and changing physiological state. In a first proof-of-concept clinical study, the approach delivered significant improvements in mobility, laying the foundation for personalised therapies capable of addressing a broad spectrum of motor symptoms in advanced Parkinson's disease. The award ceremony will take place on 12 November 2026 in Bern.
