NEW YORK — Nearly 24 hours later, Jazz Chisholm Jr. still didn’t believe he deserved to be ejected for slamming his helmet in the middle of the New York Yankees’ loss to the Boston Red Sox on Sunday night at Fenway Park.Chisholm thought Major League Baseball would simply fine him for throwing his helmet after disagreeing with home-plate umpire Adam Hamari’s checked-swing third strike call for the third out in the sixth inning. The incident occurred with the Yankees down 2-0. They eventually lost 5-4 in extra innings.“That’s just a heat-of-the-moment thing,” the second baseman told reporters at Yankee Stadium on Monday afternoon after declining to speak to them Sunday night.“That happens. I slam my helmet all the time.”Chisholm said he apologized to his teammates and especially to Anthony Volpe, who had to come off the bench and into the game in Chisholm’s lineup spot. Volpe went to shortstop, and José Caballero moved to second base."King of New York": Where does the moniker come from?Law Murray and Johnny SweetYankees manager Aaron Boone spoke with Chisholm after the game. The message? Try not to get thrown out of games, particularly with the offense struggling and Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Trent Grisham on the injured list.Chisholm hit .202 through April, but he’s been better since the start of May, posting a .764 OPS with nine home runs in 50 games entering Monday. He was slated to hit cleanup versus the Detroit Tigers on Monday night.“I’ve got to be better for the team,” Chisholm said. “I’ve got to stay in the game. It’s still a close game, 2-0. It’s not like we’re getting blown out or anything. Things haven’t been going as (fortunately) as we want. I just got caught up in the heat of the moment.”Boone said Chisholm’s ejection was justified. He added that if an umpire gives a player space to “say your piece,” they should “leave it alone and keep moving.”After Hamari called the third strike, Chisholm argued he should have checked with the third-base umpire before making the call. A video replay from the umpire’s perspective showed Chisholm saying, “No f—ing way” while close to Hamari’s face.First-base umpire Todd Tichenor ejected Chisholm after he slammed his helmet.Boone said Chisholm needs to be able to “rein it in” when his emotions flare. After watching the replay, Chisholm said he still didn’t believe he had actually swung at the pitch.Shortly after the play, former Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo said that Chisholm’s actions — putting himself in a position to get ejected — showed “some immaturity.” Rizzo was an analyst for NBC during the broadcast. The incident came after Chisholm played second base for an inning with a green lollipop in his mouth during the previous series against the Tigers.Chisholm didn’t disagree with Rizzo, whom he played with in 2024 in the Bronx.“He’s entitled to his opinion,” Chisholm said. “I don’t know what else you want me to say. He played, what, 15 years in the big leagues. He’s entitled to his opinions.”
