The Montreal Canadiens traded Brendan Gallagher to his hometown Vancouver Canucks on Monday, a league source, granted anonymity to speak about the trade that hasn’t been announced, told The Athletic. The Canadiens were always going to do everything in their power to send Gallagher to his desired destination, and their willingness to retain 50 percent of his $6.5 million salary cap hit and $4 million actual salary is confirmation of the extent to which the Canadiens’ words were sincere.Gallagher, who is expecting his second child with his wife Emma Fortin in July, said the top priority for him was to find a team near family, either his family in Vancouver or his wife’s family in Montreal.“First and foremost, the priority is my family. So that’s No. 1 always. I’ve got a daughter that’s going to be under 2 and a newborn. She can’t be doing that alone,” Gallagher told The Athletic last week. “So we need to be in a position where we’re generally close (to family) and we can get some help. And then after that, I want to be in a position where you have purpose. You’re always trying to win, that’s always the goal. But that’s one thing I’ve kind of learned this year: when purpose is taken away from you, it affects me as a person. I think it would affect anyone in their job.”
