Questioning display of the portrait of former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin along with that of the present CM C. Joseph Vijay in the Tiruppur Corporation Council Meeting Hall on Monday, members of AIADMK, BJP and Congress asked why portraits of all former CMs should not be put up as a matter of parity.Rising on their feet at the start of the meeting, members of AIADMK and Congress held aloft portraits of former CMs Edappadi K. Palaniswami and Kamaraj. BJP members, during the course of the meeting, walked to the podium and displayed the portrait of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Their collective stand was that all portraits must be displayed on even footing, when Deputy Mayor R. Balasubramaniam of CPI who officiated as the acting Mayor (in the place of the former Mayor N. Dinesh Kumar of DMK who had stepped down to contest in Tiruppur North segment in the 2026 Assembly polls and lost to S. Balamurugan of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam) explained that there were precedents to do so (display portrait of former CM).During the discussions that ensued, the Deputy Mayor, in deference to the demands placed by members, accepted to forward a ‘reminder resolution’ to the government to bring down the property tax rates in the local body.Members argued that revision of water and underground drainage charges under this circumstance was unacceptable. They were united in urging the State government to act duly on the petition signed by all 60 ward councillors for reduction in property tax rates and submitted a year ago.The members also urged the local body to act tough on households that did not permit the Corporation workers to divert kitchen and bathroom waste water as well to the underground drainage pipeline.Responding to the demand, Corporation Commissioner M.P. Amith said a system of imposing fines on those who fail to comply would be enforced.Solid waste management was also discussed at length. Expressing dismay over the increasing presence of garbage heaps on the roadsides, due to the environmental pollution caused by disposal of the wastes in abandoned quarries, the members called upon the Deputy Mayor to prevail upon the State government to depute an expert team to arrive at a lasting solution.
