The family of a 76-year-old grandmother killed earlier this month when a Tesla car ploughed into her brick house have sued the carmaker, accusing the company of gross negligence and failing to warn buyers that its advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are defective.

Tesla has acknowledged that an ADAS system was engaged at the time of the crash.

The incident raises questions around the liability of companies that make self-driving systems in situations where a driver becomes inattentive and is unable to take control when the ADAS malfunctions.
