The ANC has dismissed claims of a “fracas” or factional clash within the National Working Committee (NWC) after the party moved to join and then pull away from President Cyril Ramaphosa’s application to interdict the impeachment committee.
It was reported that Ramaphosa himself told the ANC to withdraw its application to intervene in his court challenge to parliament’s impeachment process.
A Sunday newspaper reported that Ramaphosa was unhappy after learning that the party had filed an urgent application to intervene in his bid to interdict parliament's impeachment committee, rather than seeking to participate in the broader review proceedings, and that he ordered a “court climbdown” from the case.
Ramaphosa had filed papers in the Western Cape High Court, seeking an interdict against the committee from commencing the impeachment inquiry pending the decision on his review application regarding the Independent Panel report.
