President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The ANC has refuted claims of a “fracas” or a factional clash within the National Working Committee (NWC) following the party’s approach to join and then withdraw from President Cyril Ramaphosa’s bid to interdict the impeachment committee.

Reports emerged that Ramaphosa personally ordered the ANC to withdraw its bid to intervene in his court challenge against parliament's impeachment process.

The Sunday Times reported that Ramaphosa was unhappy after learning that the party had filed an urgent application to intervene in his bid to interdict parliament's impeachment committee, rather than seeking to participate in the broader review proceedings, and that he ordered a “court climbdown” from the case.

Ramaphosa had filed papers in the Western Cape High Court, seeking an interdict against the committee from commencing the impeachment inquiry pending the decision on his review application regarding the Independent Panel report.
