Koyambedu Market Complex was inundated on Sunday after a spell of rain in the city. Traders and visitors complained about the inundation of the market complex on social media on Sunday. Visitors complained that sewage was mixing with the water in the area, increasing the risk to public health of the visitors to the market complex.Following the rise in number of complaints on social media, Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) installed motor pumps to bail out the water. By evening, the water receded inside the market complex but a few stretches of roads in the area continued to have water stagnation. Senior CMDA officials said the work on the storm water drain network in the Koyambedu Market Complex was not completed because of a delay in traffic police clearance to implement the work across the highway stretch of Poonamallee High Road to drain the water to the nearest waterway. The work on a new storm water drain network was announced by the DMK government in the Assembly in 2024. The work was carried out at an estimated cost of ₹17 crore. However, the delay in the work across the highway has increased the risk of flooding in the market complex.
