Ukrainian lawmaker and historian Volodymyr Viatrovych believes that the current escalation of historical disputes between Ukraine and Poland could be eased by a moratorium on politicians making judgments about the past.

He made the remarks in a comment to an Ukrinform correspondent in New York following the presentation of his book General Kuk: A Biography of the UPA Generation to the Ukrainian community.

"There is a wise solution, but unfortunately it is not being heard in Poland," Viatrovych said. "It is a political moratorium on making judgments about history."

He stressed that debates over the past should be left to professionals.

"Historians, by debating the past, bring us closer to understanding it," he said.
