This was announced by Ottawa Senators president of hockey operations and general manager Steve Staios, that the club has acquired the forward Andre Burakovsky in exchange for Ottawa’s sixth-round draft selection in the 2027 NHL Draft. According to reports, Burakovsky paid a sum of $5.5 million salary-cap hit on his contract, which has one year left. The Burakovsky trade comes only days after general manager Kyle Davidson made headlines with Chicago's acquisition of defenseman Bowen Byram, which was regarded as the franchise's biggest offseason decision.According to the NHL, "Burakovsky won the Stanley Cup with the Washington Capitals (2017-18) and the Colorado Avalanche (2021-22). He established career-highs in that 2021-22 season with Colorado in goals (22), assists (39), and points (61). Burakovsky spent the 2025-26 campaign with the Chicago Blackhawks, where he scored 11 goals and 33 points in 75 games with 22 assists."Not only these, in 771 career games across 12 NHL seasons, the 31-year-old prodigy has also collected 164 goals, 256 assists, and 420 points. Burakovsky was originally a first-round draft pick (23rd overall) of the Washington Capitals in the 2013 NHL Draft. Previously, Andre Burakovsky signed a 5-year, $27.5 million contract with the Seattle Kraken, including $27,500,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $5,500,000. In 2026-27, Burakovsky will earn a base salary of $3.75, while carrying a cap hit of $5.5 million, according to Spotrac. It is to be noted that he is entering the final season of a contract worth $5.5 million annually.While speaking about Burakovsky, Steve Staios stated,“Andre adds skill and playmaking ability to our forward group. We are happy to add the pedigree of a two-time Stanley Cup champion.” The Austrian native was selected on the basis of his good playmaking skills and for him already being a two-time Stanley Cup champion, which could value to their forward group.Speaking about his struggle earlier, Burakovsky admitted that, "Things have not been coming easy. But I've experienced this before in my career, where maybe you start doubting yourself a little bit, and confidence is going down, and it becomes harder to play."In addition to this, Ottawa acquired goalie Sam Ersson from the Toronto Maple Leafs and signed defenceman Jordan Spence to a four-year, $20-million contract extension. It has also come to light that following the trade, the Blackhawks now own 11 selections in the 2027 NHL Draft, compared to six picks for the 2026 draft.
