Here, then, is the evidence – the reason Labour MPs want to get rid of Keir Starmer. Why so many of them are convinced that Andy Burnham can transform their prospects, or at least that he’s a risk worth taking.

Polling for The i Paper shows a clear “Burnham bounce” for Labour. The party would leapfrog Reform UK – just about – if a general election were held now under his leadership.

It’s a troubling trend for Nigel Farage, who was far ahead in polls last summer on 35 per cent, but has seen a steady erosion since. As today’s polling shows, Farage also faces tactical voters who are determined to keep out Reform.
