This weekend Keir Starmer is talking to his cabinet, his staff and Labour MPs as it seems his premiership is hanging by a thread.

Andy Burnham’s blowout victory in Makerfield has delivered the promised hope to at least one group of people: Labour MPs who were despondent about their future – Reform no longer looks unassailable.

For now an uneasy standoff has developed with Burnham and his allies saying they are giving the Prime Minister time to consider his future, while Keir Starmer publicly says he is not going to stand down and any potential successor must challenge and defeat him.

Both now look to the cabinet to play a crucial role to either extend or cut-short Keir Starmer’s leadership.
