US Soccer wants to keep Mauricio Pochettino around for the long haul. The federation has offered its men’s national team head coach a contract extension that would run through 2030, four years beyond his current deal’s expiration after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

No decision has been made yet. But the fact that the USSF is already thinking past this summer’s tournament tells you something about how the organization views its $6 million-a-year investment.

What we know about the extension talks

USSF CEO JT Batson confirmed in late May 2026 that discussions about the team’s future, including Pochettino’s role, are actively underway. The priority, understandably, remains the World Cup itself.

Pochettino took over the USMNT coaching job in 2024, specifically brought in to steer the program through the 2026 World Cup on home soil. His approximately $6 million annual salary makes him the highest-paid coach in USMNT history.
