Woolworths has opened a new Woolies Dash 'dark store'.
Online shopping is no longer just a “nice to have”. It has become that friend who shows up uninvited but extremely useful, especially when you are too tired to face traffic or a supermarket queue on a Friday afternoon.
Woolworths is leaning fully into that reality.
The retailer has opened a new online fulfilment centre, known as a “dark store”, in Wynberg, Cape Town. Unlike a normal supermarket where customers browse aisles and debate snack choices for far too long, this space is built purely for picking and packing online orders for Woolies Dash.
Dark stores are not a new concept. The model gained global traction during the Covid-19 pandemic between 2020 and 2021, when lockdowns and a surge in online grocery shopping forced retailers to rethink fulfilment.
