President Gitanas Nausėda has formally nominated Mindaugas Sinkevičius, chairman of the Social Democratic Party, to become Lithuania's next prime minister, submitting his candidacy to parliament on Thursday evening.
Speaking from the Seimas rostrum, Nausėda said Lithuania needed not only a professional government but also leaders capable of taking personal responsibility.
"The stability of the country's institutions and the transparency of processes and the people who lead them are essential for ensuring public trust in our state and its future," the president said.
Nausėda set out his expectations for the incoming 21st government: maintaining defence spending at a minimum of five percent of GDP, continuing support for Ukraine, preparing for Lithuania's upcoming presidency of the EU Council, addressing demographic decline, attracting investment to the regions, and advancing energy independence and economic growth.
The Seimas is due to vote on the nomination on June 30. Before that, Sinkevičius will meet with parliamentary party groups.
