The sun is shining, and naturally, our everyday routines begin to shift. We increase our SPF, drink more water, spend evenings outside and tweak our skincare to cope with the heat. But what you may not realise is that your hair needs just as much seasonal attention.

Gustav Fouche has been a hairdresser for two decades and has worked with stars including Kate Hudson, Gal Gadot and LeAnn Rimes. Therefore, he is well educated in how the seasons affect our strands. Here, he shares his guide to keeping your hair looking its best for beach days and beyond.

Adjust wash routine to your summer lifestyle

“I always encourage my clients to look at their routines to figure out how to care for their hair. This is something you’ll want to reassess in the summer, as it can change significantly. For instance, people may swim more. The chlorine in swimming pools causes the hair cuticle to swell and lose moisture. Even seawater dehydrates as salt can draw out natural hydration. To combat this, rinse or wash your hair after every swim.

In summer, we all sweat more. Sweat itself is not dirty, but once it mixes with oil and pollution, it can cause buildup, so regular cleansing still matters. As a quicker fix, you can set a hairdryer to low heat but high speed to blast most of it out.”
