DA leader Geordin Hill-Lewis has called for calm ahead of planned nationwide protests on Tuesday, warning that frustrations over unemployment, crime and illegal immigration must not be allowed to escalate into violence against foreign nationals.
One of “my friends” said a very sad goodbye to me this week as the June 30 deadline looms.
I couldn’t help him very much, other than to chip in the little I could afford into the kitty for his and his connections’ long trip back home.
“Now, this country don’t like foreigners. Foreigner is going back home,” Skabana said in a short voice note in his heavy accent (I think “skabana” means “friend” or “brother”).
Unlike my other friend from war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo who is a proper refugee, I have no doubt that Skabana has been in South Africa for years illegally – not committing any outright crime per se, but eking out a living in the garden service.
