It’s happening all over Europe: The “green” transition is being blamed for all sorts of economic woes and presented as yet another conspiracy by the elite at the expense of the masses. Voices on the fringe of both the right and left stoke the demonization of cleaner energy with equal zeal. But weaning our societies off fossil fuels is essential to dealing with the climate crisis, whose primary victims are the economically vulnerable. How many of these people complaining about the shutdown of lignite mines would honestly like to live in a place where the stuff is mined and burned?
