Greece’s former European Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos on Thursday formally requested that the Supreme Court should block execution of a European arrest warrant issued against him by Belgian authorities.
Avramopoulos, who is a lawmaker with the conservative, governing New Democracy party, has denied wrongdoing and is understood to have questioned the legal basis of the arrest warrant.
In his appeal to the Supreme Court, Avramopoulos argued that the warrant did not specify in the required detail the place, time and circumstances under which the acts attributed to him were allegedly carried out, as it should under Greek and European law.
He is also understood to claim that the warrant does not adequately specify the national court decision or arrest warrant based upon which the European arrest warrant was issued.
