Belgian authorities have reportedly issued a European arrest warrant for former European Commissioner and current Greek MP Dimitris Avramopoulos, a member of the ruling New Democracy party, as part of the ongoing investigation into the Qatargate corruption scandal.
According to reports, Avramopoulos faces allegations of participation in a criminal organization, with investigators examining a financial benefit estimated at approximately €73,000.
Sources say Belgian authorities summoned the former commissioner to testify about a year ago, but he did not appear. His failure to attend is reportedly among the factors that led to the issuance of the arrest warrant.
The investigation focuses on Avramopoulos’ cooperation with Fight Impunity, a non-governmental organization founded by Italian politician and former MEP Antonio Panzeri, a central figure in the Qatargate case. Panzeri, who served in the European Parliament from 2004 to 2019, was arrested in December 2022 and charged with corruption, money laundering, and leading a criminal organization in connection with the scandal.
Panzeri founded Fight Impunity in 2019 to promote the cause of human rights and to bring violators to justice.
