An investigation 'found not the slightest evidence', says former Greek Commissioner

A European Commission investigation found that Dimitris Avramopoulos did not attempt to influence EU officials to grant visa-free travel to Qatar, the former migration Commissioner told Euractiv.

The Belgian authorities issued on Monday an arrest warrant for Avramopoulos, a former Greek commissioner, over his alleged involvement in the Qatargate scandal that rocked the EU in December 2022.

The Greek politician, who is currently a member of parliament, expects to have his parliamentary immunity lifted this week.

He is facing serious charges, including participation in a criminal organisation, repeated bribery of a public official and money laundering.
