There were checks, 'not an internal investigation', says EU executive

There was no investigation to exonerate former Greek Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos for his alleged role in Qatargate, said the European Commission on Thursday.

Speaking to Euractiv on Wednesday, Avramopoulos claimed that his case had effectively been cleared in 2022.

His account has been disputed by the Commission which said that routine checks into his post-commissioner activities had been carried out not a full-scale investigation into the NGO Fight Impunity.

“At the end of 2022, we carried out some internal checks, not an internal investigation. There is a difference between the two,” a Commission official said on Thursday.
