An early 1900s poctcard of The Sanitorium, today St Augustine's Hospital, taken from the South side.
The old picture this week is from a postcard that is dated August 5, 1904, and reads The Sanitorium which was to become todays Netcare St Augustine's Hospital. It is from the Facebook page Durban History and Stories.
Written down the side in bad isiZulu are words loosely translated as: "Much love, Annie. I see you. I love you. I greet you. Jack," and then at the bottom of the card Jack writes in English, "This is where we have to go for repairs."
The hospital has a rich history and has served the KwaZulu-Natal community for over 130 years.
One of the oldest hospitals in the country, it developed from humble beginnings. It was established in 1892 by nine Augustinian sisters from France as a sanatorium to treat tuberculosis patients.
