A postcard of the old Natal Technical College with the Botha Gardens in the foreground.
The old picture this week is a postcard of the old Natal Technikon, today the Durban University of Technology, at the top of West Street (today dr Pixley kaSeme) with the Louis Botha memorial and gardens in the foregraound. It comes from the facebook site Durban History and Stories.
The Natal Technical Institute was founded by Dr Samuel George Campbell in 1907 with premises in Russell Street.
The foundation stone of the City Campus as we know it today was laid by Queen Victoria’s son, Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn on December 3, 1910. The buildings at the confluence of Smith Street, West Street and Warwick Avenue were designed by architects Ing and Anderson in 1907 who also designed the additions 1925. The building was officially opened on August 10, 1912 for use by staff and students.
The 125-year-old building is one of Durban’s oldest heritage sites and listed as a historical monument by eThekwini Municipality.
