Two persons died in two separate incidents of assault in T. Nagar on Wednesday (June 24, 2026) night. The police have arrested two persons in connection with the cases.On Wednesday, members of the public informed the 108 ambulance service that a man was lying unconscious on the road near the Timex Watch showroom on Thyagaraya Road, T. Nagar. When the medical team arrived and examined him, they found that he had already died. A police team led by the Inspector of Mambalam Police Station rushed to the spot, sent the body for post-mortem examination, and began an investigation.During inquiries in the area and after examining CCTV footage, the police identified the deceased as Rajendran, 50, of Kannammapet. He was employed as a sanitation worker at Vijaya Mahal.Investigations revealed that Rajendran was consuming alcohol at a nearby TASMAC outlet on Wednesday evening when he got into an argument with Balaji, an auto-rickshaw driver who was also drinking there. Later, when Rajendran was walking on the road, Balaji allegedly intercepted and assaulted him. Rajendran fell to the ground, sustained a head injury, lost consciousness, and subsequently died.Based on the findings, the Mambalam police registered a case under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to culpable homicide not amounting to murder and arrested Balaji, 34, of Teynampet. Further investigation is under way.Supervisor dies after worker attacks himIn another incident on the same night, the police received information that a man with severe head injuries was found behind Vijaya Mahal Marriage Hall within the jurisdiction of the Mambalam police station. The police rushed to the location and shifted the injured man to a hospital through the 108 ambulance service. He was admitted to the intensive care unit, and an investigation was launched.The injured man was identified as Ravikumar, 46, from Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. He was staying in Chennai and worked as a contractor who supplied labourers for cleaning work at wedding functions.Police inquiries revealed that while Ravikumar and his team were working at an event in Vijaya Mahal, he had repeatedly reprimanded one of his workers, Mani alias Sornakumar, regarding work-related issues. On Wednesday night, after being scolded again while on duty, Mani allegedly attacked Ravikumar with a wooden log and fled the scene.The Mambalam Police initially registered a case under sections including attempt to murder and arrested Mani alias Sornakumar, 65, of Nagercoil, Kanyakumari district. However, Ravikumar later succumbed to his injuries despite treatment. Consequently, the case has been altered to a murder charge, and further investigation is in progress.The police said that in the two cases, one has been registered under the provision relating to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, while the other has been converted into a murder case following the victim’s death.
