A 25-year-old man who was undergoing treatment following an altercation between two groups while playing cricket in a play ground at Tondiarpet, Chennai died on Monday (June 1, 2026). The New Washermenpet police have arrested six persons and are on the lookout for other accused in the murder case. A senior official of the City police said a fight erupted between two groups headed by Manikandan and Naresh who both belonged to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, while they were playing cricket in MPT playground on May 24. Subsequently, both the parties filed police complaint and the investigation was under way.At this juncture, on May 26 night, G. Vishnu (25), brother in law of Manikandan and a resident of New Washermenpet was in his shop when a gang belonging to Naresh’s camp brutally attacked Vishnu near Indira Gandhi Nagar of New Washermenpet.During the incident, Vishnu sustained severe injuries on his head and body and was admitted to the Government Stanley Hospital. On Monday, Vishnu succumbed to injuries after which the New Washermenpet police converted the assault case into a case of murder and arrested six persons.The arrested persons include S. Kaleeswaran alias Prem, D. Naveen Kumar, M. Sukumar, M. Manikandan, B. Prashanth alias Kulla Prasanth, and D. Akila Devi.
