A Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) functionary was hacked to death following a brawl at a liquor bar in Sivaganga on Sunday.Police said R. Naveen, 26, hailed from Ponnampatti near Sivaganga. A TVK functionary, he had gone to a bar attached to a government liquor outlet near the railway station on Sunday evening. While he was consuming alcohol, an altercation broke out between him and a few others who had arrived there. In a fit of rage, the individuals hacked Naveen to death with a sword.While escaping, the culprits threatened and intimidated people standing in the Surakkulam area. Following the incident, Naveen’s relatives gathered in front of the bar and raised slogans demanding the immediate arrest of the murderers.District Superintendent of Police R. Shiva Prasad, Deputy Superintendent of Police Amala Edwin, and the Sivaganga Town Police conducted an investigation at the spot.Clashes have reportedly been recurring frequently at this particular liquor shop and bar. Moreover, a railway station and a temple are located close to it, forcing passersby to cross the stretch in fear. Consequently, local residents have been consistently demanding the removal of this liquor outlet.In this situation, allegations have surfaced that despite Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s orders to close liquor shops located near temples, TASMAC officials did not close the outlet near the railway station due to the high revenue it generated. Instead, complaints have emerged that they chose to close another shop that was causing no disturbance to the public.Demands have now intensified that this troublesome liquor outlet must be closed at least now.
