The New Washermenpet police on Friday arrested two functionaries of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) for allegedly attacking staff of a fair price shop.

The police said V. Ambikapathy, 56, of Tiruvarur, worked as a monitoring officer for fair price shops in New Washermenpet. On Thursday evening, he went to one of the shops upon receiving information about a quarrel. Two persons from New Washermenpet had abused the billing staff, Kalaiarasan, and the weighman, Daniel, using obscene language and trespassed into the fair price shop. They picked a fight by questioning whether the commodities were being sold in black. The accused then assaulted the staff, who were taken to the Government Stanley Hospital.

Based on Ambikapathy’s complaint, the police registered a case. Following an inquiry, they arrested Pradeep Kumar, 33, and Vijay, 27, of New Washermenpet.
