People have been asking what happens to minors involved in crimes after the recent school shooting in Tacloban City, which left three people dead and 20 others injured.

Since the culprits have been identified as minors – two boys, a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old – they fall under the jurisdiction of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), with the Local Social Welfare and Development Office (LSWDO) operating on the ground.

Although being a minor does not exempt them from criminal liability, the DSWD is primarily responsible for facilitating interventions that restore and rehabilitate children, in accordance with Republic Act No. 9344, or the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act of 2006.

How does the DSWD deal with minors involved in crimes?
