This week’s heatwave has already seen record-breaking temperatures, with forecasters warning they could get even higher in the coming days as the UK continues to experience hot and humid conditions.
Cardiff experienced 23.5°C overnight, provisionally making it the hottest June night and the highest June minimum temperature on record. On Wednesday, daytime temperatures reached 36.1°C in Gosport, Hampshire – breaking the previous June record from the summer of 1976, the Met Office said.
The Met Office extended its red warning for extreme heat, previously set to end Thursday night, until 9pm on Friday for London and parts of south-east England.
The alert means that “population-wide adverse health effects”, power losses and travel delays should be expected, and that “substantial changes” to daily routines are required.
