Hybrid construction gains traction as Europe searches for faster housing solutions
Europe’s housing crisis is increasingly pushing policymakers to look beyond conventional building methods and towards industrialised forms of construction that promise to deliver homes faster, cheaper and with a smaller environmental footprint.
At a recent Euractiv debate organised during the New European Bauhaus Festival, representatives from the European Commission, Parliament, industry and research organisations argued that hybrid construction could help address several challenges simultaneously, from housing shortages and labour constraints to decarbonisation and competitiveness.
Hybrid construction combines different materials – such as timber, concrete and steel – in ways that maximise the strengths of each. While still at an early stage, supporters say the approach could become an important tool as the EU races to expand its housing stock.
